Botulinum Toxin

Anti-Wrinkle treatment to reduce fine lines

What is Botulinum Toxin

It is a toxin that paralyses the muscles by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. An injection of botulinum toxin into the muscles under skin with facial wrinkles causes relaxation of those muscles, resulting in the smoothing of overlying skin.

The toxin works better on the dynamic lines, which can be seen during muscle contractions (frowning, lifting eyebrows, squinting, smiling). But after a few treatments the static lines will become softer as well (those lines that are seen when the face is relaxed).

What is it used for?

The most popular use of botulinum toxin is to treat lines on the upper face. These include frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet (lines at the outside corners of the eyes) and these are the lines that can be treated successfully.

Another popular effect of botulinum toxin is the effect of lifting the brows, which results in an opening of the eyes and contributes to a fresher look. A less common but successful use of botulinum injections is for treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). In this instance the injections are made in the superficial skin of the armpits (axillae).

Is it painful?

When administering botulinum toxin injections the needle needs to go into the muscle, which is not really deep on the face because the skin is thin.

We use the smallest needle you can find on the market, so it is virtually painless.

However, if you feel uncomfortable, we do offer a localized anaesthetic cream which we apply to the skin 10 to 20 minutes prior to treatment.

When can I see the full result & how long does it last?

It depends somewaht on the brand of the botulinum toxin used, but usually the full result is seen after 5 to 14 days. It lasts between 3 to 5 months, depending on the muscle structure of the client. This is also a subjective experience and there can be some variation in opinion amongst different people, depending on their personal point-of-view.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects which can occur, in a small percentage of the overall number include: swelling, bruising, redness, pain at the injection site, headache. However, none of these seem to be a major deterrent. The swelling lasts for a day or two and responds well to ice packs. The bruising is less noticeable if you apply Arnica cream, it mostly clears up within 3 to 5 days and can be covered by make-up.

Please note, all the treatments include a consultation, with questions about your goals and objectives, an examination of your skin structure and facial muscle structure, completing a health questionnaire and a consent form. Verbal and written after care instructions will be given to you.
