Dermal Fillers

Restore the volume
in your face

What is a dermal filler?

Dermal Fillers are used to restore volume in a face where the fat pads below skin break down with ageing and result in hollows that reflect light as shadows which make the face look older. Most of the fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in our body e.g., in articular cartilage, muscles and it is also a major component of skin. With ageing and sun damage (UV-B irradiation), the body produces less and less hyaluronic acid causing the skin to become rigid and dry and wrinkly. These lines and the volume loss can be filled with injectable fillers.

There are different brands of fillers with a variety of products with unique densities / thickness on the market. Softer products are used in the lips and for more superficial lines and the denser products are used to restore deeper areas of volume loss. Some fillers are derived from animals (pigs, rooster’s comb) and others are synthetically produced in the laboratory.

What is it used for?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are designed to reduce deep/mid-deep/fine-lines. Any age group can be treated but generally speaking it would be used more in patients where wrinkles and volume loss has occurred. Amongst the people in their twenties the most popular area for treatment with fillers would be the lips. In older generations with increasing facial volume loss most of the treatments occur in the mid face cheek bone (Zygoma) areas to provide a lift and also the lower face, treating nasolabial folds, restoring cheek roundness and volume filling in lines along the mouth angles and surrounding the mouth and also restoring the jaw line (treating jowls). Smoker lines surrounding the mouth and chin lines can also be treated with Hyaluronic Acid fillers.

Is it painful?

A local anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin surface of the areas planned for treatment 20 minutes prior to the injections are administered and most of the filler gel contains local anaesthetic as well.

When can I see the full result & how long does it last?

You can see the result immediately, however there is slight swelling immediately afterwards which takes two to three days to go down. Hyaluronic Acid treatments last on average between 7 to 12 months.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects are: swelling, bruising, redness, pain at the injection site. The swelling lasts usually for 2 to 3 days and goes down sooner when cool compresses are applied. Bruising is less noticeable if you apply Arnica cream.

Please note, all the treatments include a consultation, with questions about your goals and objectives, an examination of your skin structure and facial muscle structure, completing a health questionnaire and a consent form. Verbal and written after care instructions will be given to you.
