Microneedling

Microneedling

Rejuvenate your skin and make it plumper

Skin regeneration - SkinPen® uses micro-needling technology to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process, resulting in new healthy skin formulation

What is microneedling

Microneedling works by stimulating the production of new collagen in the skin. This is achieved by creating controlled micro-injuries to the skin with microscopic needles using the SkinPen devise. This stimulates your body’s natural wound healing process. The result is effective collagen production, skin rejuvenation and remodelling while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.  This is known CIT (Collagen Induction Therapy)  and each treatment is tailored specially to your individual needs, concerns and skin type.

Benefits

  • Significantly improves acne scarring and other forms of scarring
  • Improves skin texture
  • Minimises pore size
  • Skin tightening, lifting and rejuvenation
  • Reduces fine-lines and wrinkles
  • Improves stretch marks
  • Improves pigmentation
  • Improves skin complexion

What is it used for?

It is a very effective treatment for rejuvenating skin fundamentally. The body responds to trauma and in this instance it is micro-trauma, which triggers the healing and rejuvenation process of skin. It is effective for treating stretch marks, and improving the elasticity and plumpness of the skin so very effective as an anti-ageing treatment. Also used to improve and repair acne scarring, for reducing fine wrinkles and soften dark spots and it is also used as an adjunct in stimulating hair growth. It works very well when used as a stand-alone treatment or as part of a combined treatment approach in skin rejuvenation. In addition, the absorption of skin products (Vit C serum; Retinol cream; Minoxidil) improves when applied after micro-needling.

Is it painful?

The treatment causes only a small tingling sensations, however in most cases we apply local anaesthetic cream 20 minutes prior to starting the treatment and it works well by numbing those areas prior to starting.

When can I see the full result and how long does it last?

A single treatment is not as effective as a series of 3 or 6 treatments done over a couple of weeks. A skin cycle is six weeks in healthy skin. It usually takes 2 to 3 skin cycles before the effects of skin wounding treatments become apparent, but the effects are long lasting especially if the treatments are repeated from time to time to stimulate the tissues.

Sessions

A course of 6 treatments are often recommended to see optimum result. Treatments are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on the extent of the treatment needed to obtain optimal results.

Procedure time

SkinPen microneedling treatments on average last 60-90 minutes.

Does it hurt?

Luckily, not so much. To help reduce the risk of discomfort during your treatment, we always apply a topical numbing cream before we begin. Making this treatment a 3/10 on a pain scale for most.

Recovery time

Microneedling with the SkinPen is minimally invasive, most would say its recovery is liking to a mild sunburn and recovery time for most is 0 to 3 days depending on the extent of the treatment. Skin will most likely look and feel slightly sunburnt for 24-72 hours post-treatment and will begin to flake as skin cells begin to regenerate. Do not exfoliate for 10 days and please avoid direst heat and sweating in the first 24hours as you risk irritating the skin. Skin will heal fully within a week and results will be visible. Smooth STRONGER skin with a healthier glow!

Who should avoid microneedling?

This treatment is safe for most people and people of all skin tones. However, no one treatment is right for everyone.

You should not have Microneedling if you:

  • Heal slowly or poorly
  • Have a history of raised scars called a keloid
  • Have a weakened immune system due to a medical condition or medication
  • Being treated for Cancer/ Skin cancer
  • Are receiving radiation treatments

There are also certain times when Microneedling should not be performed. Your specialist will advise and wait to treat you if you have:

  • Been in the direct sun light prior to treatment or thinking about going into the sun in the days post treatment.
  • A skin infection.
  • Pimples that feel painful, contain pus, or go deep into your skin.
  • Taken (or are taking) isotretinoin, a medication that treats severe acne.

What are the side effects?

Very superficial micro-punctate dots of blood appear on the skin. There may also be slight swelling and redness. It looks similar to how the skin appears after some sun exposure with redness that subsides over 2 to 3 days. Your skin will be sensitive after the treatment so it is recommended to use a high SPF (50) cream for a few weeks thereafter. It is a good rule anyway to use SPF factor 50 cream on an ongoing basis to protect your skin against UV irradiation irrespective if you have any treatments or not.

Please note, all the treatments include a consultation, with questions about your goals and objectives, an examination of your skin structure and facial muscle structure, completing a health questionnaire and a consent form. Verbal and written after care instructions will be given to you.
